Linda Sue Grimes
- Sonnets
Most readers probably first think of Shakespeare in connection with the plays. But since my main interest is poetry, I think first of the sonnets.
My series of articles on the sonnets is working its way through the entire 154. The sonnets have been sectioned into three groups: the marrriage sonnets, the young man sonnets, and the dark lady sonnets.
I do not agree with the claim that the second group is dedicated to a "young man"; my commentaries seek to show how the speaker of that group is contemplating his own muse, his talent, and his poems.
Perhaps, the "marriage poems" influence the critcs decision to designate the second group as "young man" poems, and some of the "young man" poems seem as if they could be grouped with the marriage poems.
The main reason I cannot agree with "young man" designation is that there is no "young man" in the poems. If you look for any description of a human being, you will realize that none exists.
