O’Brien Wins T. S. Eliot Prize

The T. S. Eliot Prize goes to Newcastle University professor, Sean O’Brien.


Characterizing O’Brien’s poetry as “fierce, funny, and deeply melancholy,” judges for the T. S. Eliot prize awarded the poet the highly esteemed poetry prize for his collection, The Drowned Book. The prize offers a cash award of approximately $30,000.

Born in London on December 19, 1952, O’Brien currently serves as Professor of Creative Writing at Newcastle University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. He also writes reviews for the Sunday Times, the Guardian, and the Times Literary Supplement.
