The U.S. has a new poet laureate for 2007-2009.


On August 2, 2007, Library of Congress librarian James H. Billington annouced the name of the new U.S. poet laureate, Charles Simic. He will begin his duties in Ocober, when he is expected to give a reading of his own work.

Poets laureate always bring a unique plan along with their unique poetic qualities to the position. The main purpose of the position is keep poetry alive in the minds and hearts of Americans. For more information about Charles Simic, please see Charles Simic: New U.S. Poet Laureate.
